Prof. H. Grobler’s Biography

Professor-Block

Hendrik C.I. Grobler is an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Mining Engineering and Mine Surveying at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He obtained the Government Certificate of Competency in Mine Surveying in 1994 and a Masters Degree in Mineral Resource Throughout Management in 2004. Hendrik gained 18 years of industry experience as the Responsible Mine Surveyor on gold, nickel- and chrome mining projects before joining the University of Johannesburg in 2007. In 2015 he completed a PhD Degree at the University of Witwatersrand. Hendrik’s industrial experience and research fields includes the alignment of underground surveying networks using gyroscopic methods, laser scanning (LIDAR), monitoring of geological hazards including subsidence monitoring, mine planning, ore reserve valuation, ore reconciliation and forensic surveys. He has produced 13 peer-reviewed Journal Papers and 9 peer-reviewed Conference proceedings. His current research includes the application of Extended Reality in the education of Mining Engineers.
